Interceptive Orthodontics
Early Orthodontic Assessment for Growing Smiles
At Gentle Dental Umhlanga, we believe that the best time to identify orthodontic problems is before they become more complex. Interceptive orthodontics, also known as Phase 1 orthodontic treatment, focuses on guiding the growth and development of your child’s teeth and jaws while they are still growing.
Early assessment doesn’t always mean early treatment—but it does mean we can intervene at the right time if needed.

What Is Interceptive Orthodontics?
Interceptive orthodontics aims to correct developing problems while a child is still growing. Early treatment may help:
* Guide jaw growth
* Create space for erupting permanent teeth
* Correct harmful bite problems
* Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
* Improve facial development
* Simplify or shorten future orthodontic treatment
* In some cases, reduce the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery later in life

When Should My Child Have Their First Orthodontic Assessment?
Assessment is recommended by the age of 7, by this age, the first permanent molars and incisors have usually erupted. Your child’s bite can be properly assessed where developing problems can often be identified before they become more severe. Growth can be monitored to determine whether treatment is required immediately or at a later stage.
Many children simply require regular observation, while others may benefit significantly from early intervention.
Does Every Seven-Year-Old Need Braces? No. Most children do not require braces at age seven. The purpose of the assessment is to determine whether treatment is needed. Growth should simply be monitored. Early intervention would provide a significant benefit. Treatment should be delayed until more permanent teeth have erupted.
Common Interceptive Treatments
Depending on your child’s needs, treatment may include:
* Growth guidance appliances
* Expansion of a narrow upper jaw
* Correction of crossbites
* Space maintainers
* Habit-breaking appliances
* Partial braces
* Monitoring tooth eruption
* Referral to an orthodontic specialist when appropriate
